Drawing of the future cabin

Camelot Bunkhouse Project

A core part of the MITOC community, and in particular our access to the mountains, continues to be our well-loved “Camelot” cabin, located in central New Hampshire. As you may know, Camelot was built in the 1970s (on a shoestring budget), and it is nearing the end of its useful life. Since 2013, the Outing Club has been working to build new, safe and modern sleeping quarters on the Camelot property, which will ensure that MITOC can fulfill our mission for decades to come.

MITOC partnered with Maclay Architects to design a new bunkhouse for Camelot which will be located approximately 100m from the existing cabin. The new bunkhouse will contain five bedrooms (sleeping ten persons each), a large central hallway, and a covered deck. We anticipate the cost of the new bunkhouse to be approximately $500,000.

With the design now complete, we are actively seeking donations. If you are able, please consider donating to help us hit our fundraising target in 2025. We broke ground on site preparation in 2024, and fundraising permitting, we will complete the new bunkhouse in 2025. This project will ensure we can fulfill our mission for the next generation of MITOCers.

MITOC has an active group of cross country and backcountry skiers, with trips typically running from January through May. If you are interested in learning to cross country and/or backcountry ski, we run introductory trips during Winter School. In addition, MITOCers organise trips not only here in the Northeast but across the US and beyond. Join the skiing mailing list and become a member of our skiing community. Upcoming trips and events will be announced on this list.

Personal trips

You can rent cross-country, backcountry, telemark, and AT ski equipment from MITOC. We encourage personal trips and rent out our fleet for personal use, except during Winter School. Please use our gear responsibly and adhere to the club rules. MITOC does not have downhill/alpine ski equipment for rental.

Our skis are for backcountry use ONLY. Resort skiing is not allowed unless the user is uphill skiing. Do not aggressively load the equipment. MITOC has a strict no avalanche terrain policy. There can be no exceptions.

Disclaimer: We are NOT a guiding service nor a rental service. We do not guarantee the availability of our equipment; and while we strive to keep all our gear in safe and working order, we cannot be responsible for personal rentals of our gear. We do not adjust nor fit boots and skis; these are responsibilities left to the user.

How to rent equipment for personal trips

You need an active membership and need to have provided two personal checks – see MITOC rentals for more information. MITOC rents alpine touring and splitboard equipment with prior approval from the backcountry ski chairs. Cross country (nordic) skis and Telemark skis are not restricted gear and can be rented without prior approval.

You can find the alpine touring (AT) ski and splitboard request form here, or email us at mitoc-approval@mit.edu .

FAQ

Q) Can I rent for longer than one weekend?

A) Only under special circumstances. Please reach out to us separately at mitoc-approval@mit.edu

Q) Can I rent a specific set of equipment?

A) You can request an alpine touring ski/splitboard and boot size, but not a specific set of gear. If you would prefer a specific item, you can email us at mitoc-approval@mit.edu and we will try to accommodate you, pending availability.

Q) Can I splitboard/are there splitboarding trips?

A) Yes! We have three splitboards available in the dropdown menu on the form. Most trips are open to splitboarders unless otherwise specified. Please keep in mind that trip leaders may not have the expertise to help you with your gear, but you can reach out to us mitoc-approval@mit.edu with questions.

Q) How can I request Cross Country (Nordic) skis?

A) There is no need for prior approval for Nordic skis. Stop by the office to rent Classic skis or XC Backcountry skis.

Q) How can I request Telemark skis?

A) There is no need for prior approval for Telemark skis. Stop by the office to rent.

Q) Can I ski Tucks?

A) Not with our gear. Sorry!

Q) How can I adjust the alpine touring (AT) ski/splitboard bindings?

A) Some of our kits have Dynafit ST Rotation bindings; others have frame bindings. The splitboards have puck-style soft boot bindings. Please watch these videos for how to adjust and use the Dynafit bindings

For the frame bindings,

For the splitboard,

You will need to make all adjustments by yourself. You can use the in-office repair kits to adjust the bindings. Please return all items back to the kits.

Q) What fit should my alpine touring (AT) boots have? What size AT skis should I choose?

A) Alpine touring boots should not fit as tightly as alpine ski boots. When you step into the boot and stand up, your toes should be close to the front of the boot but should NOT be touching the front. When you lean forward in an athletic stance, your toes should NOT be touching the front. You should also ensure your ankles are not too snug or too loose. Too snug and you will get hotspots on the uphill. Too loose and you will lose responsiveness of the skis on the downhills. On the uphills, you can unbuckle your boots almost completely to give your feet more room and prevent hotspots.

We recommend choosing skis that are shoulder to chin height. Choose shorter skis for easier maneuverability.

Q) When is the MITOC office open?

A) Consult the Office Hour Calendar.

Q) Who do I ask to rent gear?

A) Please fill out our google form.
